About Birch Bites
How It All Started
The seeds of what would eventually become Birch Bites first sprouted when owner Logan Kunz was researching new treat options for his dogs, Grace and Avery. Scheels had stopped selling Logan’s preferred brand, and he was shocked to see the kinds of harmful chemicals and preservatives that were included in most of his alternatives. Unwilling to compromise on his dogs’ health, Logan developed his own brand of clean, all-natural treats, giving dog owners across central Minnesota much-needed access to healthy, nutritious dog treats.
About Logan
Logan has been around dogs his entire life. His parents, Travis and Shannon, own and operate The Barking Birch Pet Lodge in Cold Spring, Minnesota, and there has never been a time in his life where his family wasn’t taking care of one dog or another – or several at once. From a young age, his parents instilled in him the drive, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit that would help him form his own company dedicated to supporting the healthy development of all dogs—large and small.
While Logan was overseas, he had an Air Force dog handler that worked with his unit. Even halfway across the world, it seemed Logan could not escape the companionship of a dog. As Logan puts it, from trusting our lives to these animals or trusting our personal feelings, he feels that dogs should not be absent from anybody’s life.
During Logan’s senior year of high school, his family moved from Cold Spring to Rockville with a wild idea: to open up a dog boarding kennel. While it took him awhile to understand his parents’ decision, he came to realize that they were looking to change the future for their family.
Logan watched both his parents put in early mornings and late nights on more occasions than he could count—and Logan took notice. The blood, sweat, and tears that they poured into their business and their compassion, drive, and dedication laid a foundation.
From their developing business, Logan learned if you set your mind to something, there is nothing that can stop you. The Barking Birch grew something from nothing and became a staple in the community—something Logan hopes to accomplish with Birch Bites.
As Logan says now, “I cannot think of any people that I would rather look up to more. They are the best parents anyone could have asked for.”
An Unbreakable Bond
Growing up, Logan always heard people say there is something out there watching over every one of us. For Logan and his grandfather, a man Logan looked up to his whole life, that something has always been dogs.
The Picture on the left shows Logan’s grandfather holding a puppy that lived at his Vietnam outpost. On the right is Logan himself, holding a puppy that lived on his base in Africa. Once again, a dog linked Logan and his grandfather together, even with the 50 year difference between the photos.
